Glassblowing, Ceramics, Painting, and Floral Arrangement

Ceramics

In the spring of 2020 I took my first ceramics classes since elementary school. I took a hand building class and a wheel class. I’m really fascinated by the shape of fundamental functional items (such as bowls, cups and plates) . I also enjoyed playing with different color and glaze combinations.

I hope to perfect fundamentals so I can start to experiment with creating more ornate forms and objects and learn different glaze and painting techniques to achieve smooth, bright, and colorful objects. I’m not that into the classic earthenware look but I do love indigo blue.

Drawing & Painting

I first started drawing and painting at Rice University. I’ve recently picked it back up again with a growth mindset and while my work might not be perfect or achieving exactly what I want to achieve yet, I’m enjoying the process of exploring form, color, and composition. It really combines art and analytics. I feel in love with having to mix my own colors and determine what color to use when our eye is trying to use all of these heuristics to tell us that an object is one color, but really it’s a blend of shades and tones depending on the color, direction and intensity of the light source.

I hope to be more confident in my color analysis and my ability to sketch and draw forms. I would also like to take some more life drawing and painting courses. I hope to eventually be able to capture feelings and emotions of everyday scenes on the canvas.

Glassblowing

I started glass blowing at the Pittsburgh Glass Center in high school and was fortunate enough to take classes periodically during my time in Austin. Glassblowing is still my favorite medium because it a complex, mediative blend of art and sport that can produce colorful, stunning, and functional pieces of art.

It has forever changed the way I look at household glassware. My current favorite glassware shape is the coupe glass, although glass teacups are a close second.

While my body of work mostly focuses on slightly lumpy cylindrical forms, I am still seeking to produce a straight cylinder and hope to one day create a venetian-style goblet. I hope to start to incorporate more color and pattern after I have mastered the fundamentals.
